3D LASER ANEMOMETRY IN A ROTATING COOLING CHANNEL

The flow in rotating cooling passages of jet engine turbine rotors is considered. Contrary to thermal data which have been obtained by a lot of people, velocity field data are very few. Nevertheless, in order to validate Navier-Stokes calculations, these twice types of data are necessary. In such a Row with complex secondary structures, 3D laser anemometer is the suitable tool but its implementation on this application was a challenge.

Measurements were made first in static mode at Reynolds numbers of 5,000 and 25,000. The same model sections were then explored during rotation at a Reynolds number of 5,000 and a Rossby number of 0.33. The deformation of the axial velocity profile resulting from the Coriolis acceleration appears clearly when comparing the results obtained in the sections of the centrifugal arm. In the transverse plane, the two other velocity components show the secondary Row structures with two contrarotating vortices. The results obtained in the centripetal arm show that the flow depends of the 180 deg straight-corner turn located upstream.

These measurements confirm the assumptions made on the organization of this type of flow, and the simulation results obtained at ONERA with the MATHILDA code and also by other teams who have published papers on the subject.

The first results obtained during this experimental work demonstrate the validity of the 3D laser anemometrv in such a case. They show also some insufficiencies for the application to a given experimental caset.

TURBOCHARGER FOR SOFT SUPERCHARGING OF AUTOMOTIVE

DIESEL ENGINE

Research has been conducted for the purpose of soft supercharging of the automotive diesel engine. This supercharging, which needs some minor modifications of the atmospheric version, induce an increasing in the engines performance of the engine as well as a reduction of the pollutants, by a better filling of the engine., The pressure ratio is 1.4 instead of 2.0, generally observe ' d for recent turbocharged engines. The research has been both theoretical and experimental. The theoretical part, is based on a quasi-monodimensionnal program of modeling, for centrifugal compressors, developed in our laboratory. Given the high cost of realization of a complete prototype of a compressor, the experimental part is based on the modification standard existing compressors. Experimentation consisted of changing various dimensions of the same compressor, such as the number of blades, the impeller tip diameter, the diffuser channel and the trailing edge shape. The calculation program allowed orientation of the tests which in turn contributed toward modification of some elements of the program itself. This paper presents the most significant results arising out of this synergy.

DEVELOPMENT OF AN AERODYNAMICAL AND MECHANICAL OPTIMIZATION METHODOLOGY OF COMPRESSOR BLADES

This paper describes a research project aimed at designing axial compressor blades. This can be achieved by including aerodynamical and mechanical programs into a global optimization process. The data transfer between these different parts is performed by a task manager software which is the guideline of the method. The aerodynamical simulation codes, based on a classical quasi-three-dimensional approach, combine a meridional throughflow as well as several blade to blade Row calculations. The mechanical programs allow both static and dynamic analyses of blades. Impact computations and lifetime prediction will be taken into account in the future.

At the present time, the general program optimizes the mass or the efficiency of the compression stage by using a throughflow computation and a verification of frequency security margins.

AEROELASTIC FORCED RESPONSE OF TURBOMACHINERY BLADES

A formulation of the forced response of turbomachinery bladed disks is presented, which includes aeroelastic coupling, frequency mistuning of blades and friction damping.

The excitations considered are only from aerodynamic origin. A case of excitation by upstream wakes is detailed.

The mechanical model of the mistuned bladed disk is obtained by an original technique of component modes synthesis. The dynamic response with friction is computed in the frequency domain by a nonlinear multiharmonic method.

These methods are applied to the forced response study of a bladed disk from a high pressure turbine (PAT). Vibratory energy localization phenomena due to mistuning are discussed, as well as nonlinear behaviors induced by friction. Numerical results are compared to experimental results.

RECENT RESEARCH IN ROTATING STALL CHAOS, FRACTALS AND ATTRACTORS

As the mass flow is reduced at constant rotational speed, a fluid dynamic instability arises in axial-Row compressors, placing an upper limit to their operative range: rotating stall. When the compressor enters stall, the flow, pattern shows quite a range of possible configurations depending not only on the specific machine built but also in the characteristic of the joined net and on the throttle operation. The particular behavior of this nonlinear complex but structured phenomenon has suggested a scientific approach with the tools of chaos theory. The phase space reconstruction technique has been applied to the time traces recorded during stalled operation of two different axial-flow compressors with the aid of five different sensors. The topologic structure of the phase portraits is investigated through fractal analysis algorithms and the attractors have a fractal dimension typical of chaotic and strange attractors. Comparisons are made between same operating conditions but different sensors and similar operating conditions on the two rotors. The predictive aspect of an attractor is investigated.

SIMPLIFIED METHOD FOR THE FREQUENCY ANALYSIS OF OFFSHORE STRUCTURES WITH INCLINED MEMBERS

This paper presents a simplified procedure for the deterministic dynamic analysis of offshore structures with inclined members in the frequency domain. This simplified procedure requires the linearization of the velocity term of the Morison formula. A direct time integration method is implemented in the time domain, in order to verify the efficiency of the frequency domain procedure and the consequences of the involved simplifications. Three typical structures : a caisson, a steel jacket and a reinforced concrete lacustrine structure, are analyzed. Linearization of the velocity term, leads to more conservative results with a maximal error of 15% for the three analyzed structures.

CONTROLE INTRINSEQUE DE COAXIALITÉ D'UNE LIAISON PIVOT HYPERSTATIQUE A DEUX PALIERS

par F. SOULAS

UMR 5513 ENISE 42000 St. Etienne

INTRINSIC CONTROL OF COAXIALITY FOR A PAIR OF HYPERSTATIC BEARINCS

This study proposes a method of intrinsic control descended from theory of Clearance and Tolerance Space and whose originality is to provide a necessary and sufficient condition of assembly of hyperstatic bearings. The development is restricted to the pairs consisting of two bearings and the hypothesis of the study is interchangeability.

The approach is built of two concepts

- the definition of coaxiality which keeps the same role in the two components pair (the definition using one of them like a reference is not accepted). - the transformation of the spatial problem into a planar problem due to a projective property of the Clearance and Tolerance Space.

The control process itself consist : on the hand in inferring two couples of three-circles from the coaxiality specifications (a couple of three circles for the shafts and one for the frame), on the other hand in inferring two couples of triangles representing a shaft and frame images from the measurements.

So as to interchange shafts and frames it is necessary and sufficient to include each triangle into its own three circles
